Critique
In “Washington hosts for Paws for a Cause,” the picture faced to the right should be facing toward the text in the same direction. For example, the picture in the “Paws for a Cause” article should be at the left of the text since Kimberly Chatterjee is facing to the right. The picture should always be facing toward the text. The width of the picture is just right–two columns width. As stated in the Harrower, two columns width is just right.
“If the photo faces right: This is the better solution, since the action of the photo will flow into the text. To anchor this design, both the photo and the text block need ample width; the photo should be at least 2 columns wide”
Also on the first page, the photo story “A dedication to those affected by breast cancer,” the horizontal photo and the cutline are not in the right order. On page 9 of the Harrower, the correct order is: photo, cutline, headline, and text.
On page 10 of the October issue, the column article by Edin should be in a different order. Due to vertical story design options from the Harrower on page 12, the correct order should be picture, headline, cutline, and text. The tennis article on the top of the page faces the photo in the right direction with the person facing toward the text.

Beat Report
The freshman class hosted the Sadies Hawkin dance. It almost got canceled at first because there weren’t enough people who bought the ticket. On the last day, ASB sold enough tickets, and thus the dance took place on Feb 6.
First Semester
First semester went by really quickly.I learned a lot of things in journalism within this short amount of time. I got to experience the steps and procedures a news reporter has to go through in publishing a newspaper. I learned how to write news articles and their components. I didn’t know that there were ways to organize news articles in a specific way. I had thought all these times that it was just like writing any other writing composition.
When I first signed up for this class, I didn’t think I was going to learn much from it. However, I’ve realized how much more I have to learn about journalism. Journalism isn’t just simply writing random things; it is about providing honest news to people and keep them interested in what is going on around them. First semester very much exceeds my expectations of what to learn. In the second semester, I hope to excel in writing articles and learning more about the procedures in publishing a news paper such as photo editing, page layouts, and so o
Beat Report
There was a luncheon/potluck for Link Crew leaders today in the MPR.
The advisor Ms Dewitt was really mad because she is not getting reimbursements for her link crew expenses.
In addition, the district and the school aren’t supporting her as much as they should be.
Info-graphic
This info-graphic caught my attention because it is color-coded. Therefore, it easily catches people’s attention and is easy to understand. The height of each color bars show how much time a person spends doing something. The pictures on the right also easily depict what the graphs stand for without having to read anything.
We can use this info-graphic in the Hatchet to show trends in the STAR testing scores of our school throughout the years. We can also use it to show an increase/decrease in budget of specific areas of the school such as school supplies fund, library fund, elective fund, and so on. In general, this info-graphic can be used with polls involving different groups (ie. freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors) within the survey.
